A meeting was called by the President of Conference in July 1938, with a plea issued to the Executive of Conference that an appeal be started for 1,700 Methodists to each give £1 so that the home might be free of burdens and to enable more efficient work.
The Executive approved this scheme and thus the Honorary Secretary of Resthaven, Mr T.R. Taylor, wrote to the Methodist press, urging folk to give. Rev. Charles Schafer urged people to visit the home at Shirley Gardens so that they would then be convinced of the real need.
