Sister Nellie Joyce arrived as matron in 1941, bringing with her a sense of care and service that would set the pattern for the future story of Resthaven. She had accepted the position at a greatly reduced salary, knowing the dire financial need of the home.
Those who assisted Matron Joyce included Miss Olive Ward and Mrs Keelan (who assisted with the kitchen and housework), and Mr ‘Buzzie’ Bussenschutt (the gardener, with outside chores). Buzzie’s garden was a delight, with vegetables and fruits grown in season. There were also flowers aplenty, with some visitors surprised by the sight of the elderly ladies kneeling at garden plots, or along the paths, assisting with weeding and attending the flowers.
