Resthaven Leabrook opens

On Saturday 2 December 1944, a large crowd gathered on the grounds of a truly magnificent federation-style home at Leabrook, for the opening ceremony of Resthaven Leabrook. Already, some 22 women had been moved to the site, who were all ‘delighted’ with their new home.

The Mayor of Burnside, Mr Philip R. Claridge, officially opened the new Resthaven. Next, Secretary of the Board of Resthaven, Rev. G.W. Shapley, spoke about the move from Payneham and the need to make up the balance of £3,000, which had been the additional cost for the Church to buy the Leabrook property.

In honour of her late husband, Mrs Mortimer publicly declared her intention of raising over £1,000 for a memorial wing in his name.

Crowds filtered through the spacious and well-appointed rooms of the home, with expressions of appreciation that it was worthy of Methodism. The day’s events at Resthaven Leabrook concluded with several musical items, an afternoon tea and fete.

Later that month, residents enjoyed the first Christmas celebration at the new Resthaven.
