On 7 April 1962, Resthaven Mitcham was officially opened by Sir Thomas Playford, Premier of South Australia. It was an extraordinary event, attended by a crowd of 1,500 people and called, by Rev. C.J. Davis:
‘The greatest Christian witness [he had] seen at such a function held by the Methodist Church’.
Administrator (CEO), Frank Day, felt that the building of Resthaven Mitcham was a statement that the Church was open to the needs of ‘a changing world’, and that it had ‘reorientated’ its aims to cater for the community.
Yet, Day’s remarks were tempered a little by the knowledge that demand for accommodation was still high, and that a selection committee had been established for the acceptance of people to Resthaven.
