With his father, Rev. Clem Hawke, a resident at Resthaven Malvern, Prime Minister Bob Hawke and his wife Hazel made time to visit the homes when they could.
On 23 June 1985, Resthaven Marion was honoured with a special visit from Bob and Hazel Hawke, Federal Minister for Health Dr Neale Blewett, Federal Member for Kingston Gordon Bilney and the State Member for Brighton Jenny Applebee.
The occasion was the 91st birthday celebration of former Administrator, Rev. Guthrie Hutchinson. It was a day of great excitement, with the Prime Minister even helping Guthrie with the birthday cake!
Opportunity was taken to express concerns about the need for greater Government support for both operating and capital expenses. Whilst Bob Hawke made no promises, he expressed strong support for the work being undertaken and the high level of care given.
