In 1985, Resthaven implemented a new admissions process under the guidance and consultancy of Geriatrician Dr Robert Penhall.
The process created a more efficient system that identified an applicants' needs and offered accommodation to those with the greatest need. The new process was in response to government and community expectations that encouraged individuals to remain in their own homes with community support for as long as possible.
The new process of admission was:
1. Completion of application forms
2. Referral to the Domiciliary Care Service in their area
3. Day Therapy Centre assessment
4. Categorisation of the applicant by the Resthaven Assessment Team
5. The most urgent priorities given the first suitable vacancies
A waiting list was still maintained, but potential residents were encouraged to only apply when they believed that a change of accommodation was necessary. As such, in the following years after this new assessment process was introduced, waiting list numbers reduced.
