After four and a half years, the $6 million redevelopment of Resthaven Leabrook was officially opened on 25 November 1990.
Commencing in 1986, many of the old buildings at Leabrook were replaced by new service areas (kitchen, laundry, maintenance). The Day Centre was relocated to new premises in September 1986, and the new hostel building was completed in October 1986. Over three floors, the hostel comprised 61 rooms, including a 10-room special care wing for those with dementia. About 30 existing hostel residents moved into the ground floor and new residents moved into the two upper levels the following month.
The third and final stage of the build — the administration centre, community area and self-care units — begun in late 1989 and was completed in August 1990.
Many new activities and experiences were available because of the upgraded facilities, particularly the function hall and new shop, “The Chattery”. New activities for all residents were integrated with old routines, with volunteers included in the programs developed. All aspects of health care and independence were promoted to ensure maximum advantage.
A planned stage four, of upgrading the nursing home, was never brought to fruition due to lack of funding.
