The ‘Battle of Waterloo’

Judy Steel, Ruth Telfer, Jill Pretty and Julie Johinke delivered an outstanding and successful presentation on the problems of incontinence, aptly entitled ‘The Battle of Waterloo’, at the National Continence Conference in Perth in October 1993.

This event, with its emphasis on practical education, spawned a notable manual for practitioners in aged care and led Judy and Ruth to address the subject at an international conference in Spain. Critically, education on continence became an integral part of the staff orientation program.

The team also presented a shortened version of the Battle of Waterloo at the Tri State Conference in Mildura in March 1994. It was an opportunity to exchange knowledge and ideas, and to assist those who had problems and were looking for advice.

In the coming years, Community Continence Clinics were established at each Therapy Service and Ruth Telfer was awarded for producing a resource manual for carers, titled ‘Quality Continence Management’, which won a Messenger Press ‘Community Nurse of the Year’ award.
