Redevelopment at Resthaven Malvern completed

The final stage of Resthaven Malvern’s redevelopment was completed at the end of October 1994.

Finishing with the completion of the new nursing home, the redevelopment had spanned over several years with approximately 75% of buildings demolished. It involved changes to self-care units and hostel rooms and made way for Head Office personnel.

The first part of the redevelopment involved refurbishing the Shapley Building to make it a suitable office space for corporate Head Office staff, who moved in in January 1992.

Following this, construction of the new hostel building commenced. To make way for the new building, a most spectacular feat took place, with the relocation of the two large palms that were in the way. The move was a requirement of planning approval, due to pressure from local residents to retain the trees. With the help of a large excavator, and an even larger crane, the trees were moved to the northeast corner of the site and incorporated in the new landscape design.

Once the 28-room hostel building was completed in January 1993, the construction of new self-care units and the nursing home commenced.

An ‘Open Day’ was held on 21 May 1993 to celebrate the building redevelopment.
