Resthaven’s sixtieth anniversary was celebrated in 1995. For Board, Executive, staff, residents, and clients, the ‘Diamond Jubilee’ was a turning point — the beginning of a new era.
A dedication service was held at the Malvern Uniting Church on 12 March 1995, with 350 people in attendance.
Celebrations were held at each residential site, including Malvern’s International Food Fair, Mitcham's Big Birthday Party, Westbourne Park's ‘Indoor’ Garden Party, Marion’s Vintage & Veteran Car Exhibition and Paradise’s Wurlitzer Organ Recital. A.
An additional focus during the year was to raise funds toward the replacement of the ageing Resthaven bus. The $84,000 target was reached, and Resthaven went on to purchase a new bus in April 1996. Accommodating two wheelchairs and fifteen other passengers, the new bus offered greater comfort and safety during the highly valued trips and excursions for residents and clients at all Resthaven locations.
The culmination of the anniversary year was the launching of ‘Resthaven — The first sixty years’ by Rob Linn, on 10 May 1996 at Resthaven Leabrook. This was the first official documentation of Resthaven’s history.
Other significant events held during the year included:
• The celebration of Resthaven Leabrook's 50th Anniversary in 1994, with an Open Day in October featuring a photographic display and various entertainment and activities. A formal ‘reunion’ dinner was held in November for present and past staff.
• A highlight of the year was the Channel 9 "A Current Affair" Angry Anderson Mother's Day Challenge. Resthaven undertook the key role in co-ordinating the event. It was a great success and a memorable day for all those who were fortunate to be involved.
• The development and publication of the Dementia Resource Manual by the Resthaven Dementia Resource Group. The manual attracted significant interest interstate and overseas. The manual was later supplied to each hostel in South Australia and to members of Aged Care Queensland.
