A national first
Self Management Group

Resthaven Marion Therapy Services began offering a Parkinson's Clinic — the first of its kind in Australia.

Held for half a day per month, physicians from the Repatriation General Hospital attended Resthaven Marion Therapy Services to treat clients who, in many cases, also benefitted from Parkinson's Self-Management Groups and other therapies. The clinic facilitated the integrated medical and allied health management of Parkinson's Disease for clients in a community setting.

This is just one example of how Resthaven Therapy Services provided a range of treatments and health self-management groups to assist older people achieve their goals, maximising levels of function through rehabilitation and maintaining ability for independent living in the community.

Although such health promotion was receiving increased attention from both State and Federal Governments, funding opportunities to expand services were limited. A range of health service groups were offered by Resthaven, including: Parkinson's, stroke, speech pathology talk back' (for aphasia), falls/balance, back care, managing chronic conditions (e.g. arthritis, pain etc), living with memory loss and shoulder care. Exercise groups at each location assist clients maintain improvements made following therapy interventions.
