2002

A new strategic direction

Reviewing Resthaven's strategic directions, the board adopted a new five-year Strategic Plan, covering 2002–2007. Two research papers were commissioned to guide the plan. One was an overview of opportunities and emerging service needs and the other identified demographic trends in the elderly population of metropolitan Adelaide and its surrounds. This research assisted in defining issues and establishing clear directions and priorities for future decisions.

Within the Strategic Plan, Resthaven, for the first time, included ‘key areas’ alongside the mission, vision and values. These were:

1. Attract and maintain quality staff.

2. Maximise quality service standards and quality of life outcomes across the organisation.

3. Undertake organisational growth in a planned and considered manner.

4. Service development and best practice.

Included in this process was consideration of the national move by community service agencies of the Uniting Church to adopt a common national brand and logo. Resthaven decided to join with other agencies of the Uniting Church in including the "UnitingCare" logo as part of our corporate image and placing it on our publications. The aim of common branding under "UnitingCare" was to increase public recognition of the considerable contribution collectively made to the nation by Uniting Church agencies.

Additionally, the Resthaven's Board spent time reviewing its Governance obligations. The Board developed a Governance Charter, outlining the Board processes and limitations within the day-to-day management of Resthaven through the Chief Executive Officer.

It was also decided that an annual Memorial Service was held at each metropolitan site, to remember those residents who had passed away in the preceding twelve months. The service was well received by residents and staff, who appreciated the opportunity to remember lost friends and give thanks for their lives.
