Finding a balance

The Government, despite its push to develop consumer-centred care packages, were not, in the opinion of the aged care sector, maintaining adequate funding to support the strategy. Thus, Resthaven and other providers of aged care services were faced with a difficult situation — asked to do more with less. These pressures had been foreseen by the Resthaven Board and Management. The result, at Board level, was an increasing emphasis on corporate governance.

Carole Davidson explained the position:

‘The need to manage an aged care organisation, as governments seek to reduce real per capita funding, requires a strong commercial focus to ensure that the ongoing financial health and stability of the organisation is maintained. However, not-for-profits such as Resthaven must not lose sight of the motivation underlying their creation. A balance between mission and commercialism is required.’
