On 17 May 2013, Peter Jenkin was endorsed as a Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner in Aged Care by the Australian Health Professions Regulatory Authority (AHPRA). With his endorsement, Resthaven had the first Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner in Aged Care in Australia.
Peter was first employed as a Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner Candidate by Resthaven on 15 December 2011.
At that time, Federal Minister for Mental Health and Ageing, Mark Butler, announced that Peter was Resthaven’s successful Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner candidate under the Federal Government National Nurse Practitioner – Aged Care Models of Practice Program. His employed came after Resthaven had received funding from the Australian Government for a project exploring appropriate models of practice for Nurse Practitioners in aged care.
As a Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner, Peter worked across both residential and community services at Resthaven. He provided information and support to staff and gave residents and clients access to advanced and extended clinical care to provide the best outcomes for end-of-life care.
On 14 October 2013, the annual Palliative Care Council South Australia’s 2013 Palliative Care Awards were announced at Government House, with a reception hosted by patron of the Palliative Care Council South Australia, Mrs Liz Scarce, and husband, His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR, Governor of South Australia. Mrs Scarce presented Peter Jenkin with the ‘Innovation Award’, which recognised his demonstrated innovation and ingenuity in contributing to the advancement of the field of palliative care.
In June 2014, Peter was acknowledged with a palliative care award, which recognised his personal contribution to the important role of supporting and assisting residents, clients and families.
