Although it was evident that Resthaven Leabrook was well in advance of the Payneham site, members of the Church had attested to the deficiency of comforts and conveniences at the home.
In 1945, Rev. George Shapley was committed to expanding the facilities and developed a fundraising strategy, including the Mother’s Day appeal, to raise a sizeable amount of money. The first published advertisements for the Mother’s Day collections in churches stressed the need for church members to give. The donations were necessary; for not only was there a need to expand the buildings at the site to comfortably house the staff and residents, but also the waiting list continued to grow.
