Redevelopment begins at Leabrook

In June 2012, plans were formalised for a redevelopment at Resthaven Leabrook, with the Burnside Council granting provisional consent. A public consultation meeting was held at the home, with the opportunity for members of the public to chat with staff about the plans.

The project’s budget was set at $12 million, fully funded by Resthaven. It involved building eight serviced retirement living apartments and eliminating all shared rooms in the residential aged care home (ensuring every resident had their own room with ensuite).

‘Resthaven is committed to maintaining high quality accommodation for frail, elderly people that meets the aged care and lifestyle expectations of the public today. We are upgrading an old 1950s section to improve our accommodation options.’ — CEO Richard Hearn

To make way for construction, Resthaven donated two self-contained independent living units with disability access and facilities to the Uniting Church Adare Camp and Caravan Park at Victor Harbor.

Unfortunately, the Gerard Memorial Chapel also had to be demolished, as it was structurally unsound and had not been used for nearly a decade. The Gerard family were consulted and the memorabilia and foundation stones became a feature of the new building.
